Fishing for Tragedy-Surfer Magazine
A recent story from Surfer Magazine related to the shark attack on David Lilienfeld at Cave’s Beach, Cape Town, South Africa. I was lucky enough to meet and surf with the people behind this story while in South Africa. My great friend, brother from a different mother, and host in South Africa, Phil Nel, is quoted at the closing of the article. The story The Caves locals is inspiring, not to mention surreal. I feel honored to have been given a glimpse into their lives, and to learn from their passion to live their lives as surfers in False Bay, to live their lives no matter what, to let nothing stop them from living.

I have been sitting on some words that I have written about this event. The whole situation is so surreal that I am not sure I completely understand those words. Hearing the news of the attack, feeling cold shivers down my spine, the feeling of the blood rushing from my face, seeing that the attack was at Caves-Phil’s home break, and fearing the worst while hoping for the best, reading Phil’s thoughts on the tragedy and his account of Matt’s call to him after the witnessing the attack in Trusting Random Events. I am not sure I could ever do it justice with words….
